Today I Learned About The Woodwose, And So Did Matt Moneyaker and Bobo

British researcher Adam Bird spent some time with Matt, Bobo, Cliff and Ranae earlier this year for the U.K. Bigfoot episode. One thing he tried to get across to the crew was that there are no Bigfoots in the U.K. -- But... There's is something like it and it's called the Woodwose. Now, I'll admit right here that I have no idea what Woodwoses are but I looked it up, and here's how Dr Karl Shuker explain the European beast:

...European wild man, also known as the woodwose or wudewasa, has such a richly intertwined history of folklore, depictions in medieval art and architecture, and reported true-life encounters, including certain very recent ones, that some cryptozoologists and primatologists wonder whether such beings might indeed have existed in the not-too-distant past, and may even still linger on today in some of Europe’s more remote, secluded localities.

According to Adam Bird, he tried to explain the Woodwose (which isn't really a Bigfoot) to the U.S. team, but all they wanted to do was talk about Bigfoot. Bird explains  his frustration:

With the British Bigfoot episode of 'Finding Bigfoot' coming up in the US soon, I thought it was time we had a post in group about it. Paul Bird and I were part of the episode and I have to be honest, it is something I regret doing. I thought we would be making more of the world aware of the Woodwose phenomena but I was wrong. What happened is that we met three cynical investigators in Matt, Ranae and Bobo, who had already made up their minds that we did not have anything here. Cliff was certainly more open-minded but even he was sceptical in his initial approach. When we told of our experiences, they were all polite, to the point that they were making a TV show at least. When we did the encounter recreation at the scene, in Sherwood Forest, with Matt and Ranae, it was pretty clear that this was certainly not going to work out. For one thing, the Finding Bigfoot crew came to the UK searching for the wrong thing. They came to Britain looking for a Sasquatch. What they didn't seem to understand (even after we explained it several times) was that if they were trying to find a Sasquatch, they were not going to find it. We told them they should be looking for something completely different to the U.S Bigfoot, something that acts different, exists differently. But they seemed to have nothing but Sasquatch on the brain. Sasquatch does not exist in the UK.....but Woodwoses do, and they are very different creatures in the way they have evolved to hide and remain unnoticed in this country. There are people who know a lot about how the UK creature probably works yet FB were not willing to listen to what we had to say about the subject. This is why they likely left the UK thinking there is nothing here. That is why Bobo seemed to be laughing at the prospect of us having a hominid in this country. Finding Bigfoot went about this the absolute wrong way and that is why they were unsuccessful.

  1. We've got such rich legends of giants in Britain. Saxon giants and Celtic/Welsh mythology (Mabinogion). Merfin (Merlin) was supposed to be the unkept wildman of the woods, who had a major hand in building stone henge (by the legends). He was a master herbsman and new of all vegetation and natural remedies (like some of the native legends of Sasquatch). There are some legends that say giants built stonehenge;

    "Burial mound (barrow) near Stonehenge being excavated from Historical Survey of the County, of Cornwall, 1817

    In the village of Men, near the Lands End, a farmer, in the year 1716, removing a flat stone seven feet long and six wide, discovered underneath it a cavity formed by stone, two feet long at each end, and on each side another stone twice as long. In the middle was an urn, full of black earth, and round it were some very large human bones irregularly dispersed. In some sepulchers have been found bones much larger than those of the human body."

    Furthermore; the images of Medieval European Woodwose almost always portray these beings as possessing a large stick-like club, along with depictions of them snatching woman and children which is amazingly consistent with American legends;

    "Giant Hand-Axe from Sheringham, Norfolk. An altogether remarkable and gigantic hand-axe, discovered embedded in the beach below Beeston Hill, Sheringham, by Mr. J. P. T. Burchell, has been figured and described by Mr. J. Reid Moir (Proc. Prehistoric Soc. East Anglia, 7, Pt. 3). The implement measures in its greatest length 15J inches, in greatest width 6J inches, in greatest thickness 5J inches. Its weight is approximately 14 lb. It was derived originally from the base of the Cromer Forest bed, which rests upon the surface of the chalk. The implementiferous bed runs in beneath the Forest Bed strata and the glacial deposits which form the cliff, some 200 ft. in height. The material of the axe is of flint, the colour of the flaked surfaces being jet black. The ridges and outstanding parts are abraded, and it is striated in places. There is a small area of the cortex remaining, which shows a ferruginous staining."

    I'm not buying the idea that they're here today though to be honest. You simply don't get the frequency of sightings you do in the States to which the same percentage that accounts for the UK sightings may actually prove to be those that are inaccurate or missidentification out of the sheer number in the States. At one point there were great forests that went from the very South of England to the very North of Scotland with an abundance of wildlife... Not any more. I have a very, very open mind and invite any UK Bigfoot enthusiasts to try and persuade me that they are here, but I really don't think so.

    Big cats... Now there's something UK cryptozoologists should get their teeth into, cause they're here and things are really gonna take off in the near future with regards to the awareness of such. Believe me, I am very excited about this.

    3. Big cats are seen much of the world over (or the variation of big black cats). If the idea that bears could be misidentified as Bigfoot, it has to pale in comparison into the idea that domestic cats could be misidentified.

    4. Didn't the idea of fairies hold some belief at one time in parts of the UK and Ireland? Myth making and culture cannot be totally dismissed in viewing claims for Bigfoot or other similar claims. Then you have the attention seekers and money seekers to contend with.

    5. 3:56... You're a nerd right? YouTube "big cats UK"... And sit down. Bears are not mistaken for Sasquatch at the frequency you would pray for, because of the consistency of details reported across a wide range of people from credible and professional backgrounds, in line with footage there is to confirm such.

      Glad I could help.

      4:08... Bears, beavers, Eagles, all things are in myth and legend side by side with that of the Sasquatch. Indegenous cultures pass oral history down through generations as written text an be manipulated, and it is one heck of a leap of faith to suggest that for ten thousand years, different cultures residing in the US have been a part of the same secret society gorilla suit wearing people saying boo to people, when the natives never had an idea what an ape looked like, and so many early Europeans in the US thought native customs undesirable... Bearing in mind this time frame has transitioned into modern mediums with modern anecdotal, physical and biological sources of evidence.

      No, no... The pleasure's all mine.

    6. Oh... And I'll add... Anthropologists are still finding native names for Sasquatch.

      Peace.

    7. Since you apparently have no concern for generalizing people, I will consider you a recluse with no life other than waging your fantasized wars online. Seriously, Joe, how much time do you spend here and on the internet in general? Perhaps a hobby is in order.

      No charge for the consult and you're very welcome. Perhaps in time we can work on your social skills.

    8. Generalizing is easy when you have the same insulting approach as the most offensive of posters. I would familiarize yourself with the accessibility of iPhones too... And stop taking things so personally, my personal life is just fine and dandy.

      : )

  2. The show is called Finding Bigfoot, not Finding Cryptids. They may have gone into variations in other countries, but I could see the reluctance here.

  3. Adam's suggestion that there is 'wildmen' in the UK is completely without basis or evidence. The UK Hotspots for these are tiny in comparison to their US counterparts, are flooded with hikers, dog walkers and mountain bikers. Despite this there are very few sightings. Credible or otherwise.

    Amazed the FB guys followed this BS up but hey what do they have to lose? Just more dead air right?

    If anyone thought some US footers lacked a sense of reality, check out the UK guys! Quite incredible....
