Was The Albert Ostman Story a Hoax?

We've always been fascinated by the Albert Ostman story, but this is the first time that we've heard anything about it being a hoax. Greg W. sent us a message asking for any references to the so-called hoax, but like Greg, nothing turned up in our archives. According to our recent poll, 82 percent of our readers believe Albert's story about being kidnapped by a family of Bigfoots.

Here's what Greg wrote:

How do Squatchers, I seem to recall reading somewhere that Albert Ostman before he died recanted his "kidnapping" story, admitting he made the story up influenced by tales told by native americans of the area. Ive since tried to find this again but cannot find any admission by Ostman of a hoax, has anyone else read such an article? any info or links would be gratefully recieved to put me out of my misery

thanks

    1. Yes... We know you like to talk ****. And speaking of that, I find all this talk about role playing a bit of a misplaced effort... Especially when one can merely come back and reference the physical and biological evidence that supports the idea of relict hominids being legit.

      Too easy... But that's the JREF for you. When they're not merely insulting people and expressing what is quite clearly a perverse level of superiority complex, they're trying every other angle possible instead of confronting what is their biggest obstacle;

      The evidence.

I know theres no evidence for giant muscle bound ape people[ I realise the fuzzy pics don't match eye witness accounts] .this doesn't mean ape people don't exist

I firmly believe they kidnapped him , out of curiosity . thee ape people who've managed to evade satellite/drones /cameras/hunters etc etc....but was fooled by a little snuff in the guys pocket. as he blew it in their faces .They all rolled about the floor coughing which incapacitated them for over an hour allowing him to escape

    whats not to believe

a believable scenario if ive ever heard one

"I know theres no evidence for giant muscle bound ape people[ I realise the fuzzy pics don't match eye witness accounts] .this doesn't mean ape people don't exist."

You see... People like Gavin have to maintain that there is no evidence for this subject, apart from the proposed images and videos, because from here it is easier to take control of the topic and declare their premises with more confidence. Analysing the available scientific data and the reports that amount to thousands of years of cultural and contemporary reports merely puts this into context. For example, a significant percentage of the reports point to a creature 8 feet plus in height... The collaborating physical evidence? The track impressions that are twice the size of that of a normal human; whilst though many prints are different in size, they still have the same texture and ridge flow pattern, like a humans however twice the size; meaning a subject twice as big, twice the strength, three times if they've evolved to their environment like one would naturally expect.

      As for drones, you are aware that there are several layers of canopy in dense wilderness areas where these creatures are likely to evade, right? There are three whole databases of reports gel people like hunters, whilst video footage and cameras have done as best a job as can be expected with still the occasional hit. Here's a video analysis by a biologist;
      http://youtu.be/kar3kQWzUw8

Now... Please, whilst mere cynicism may work with anecdotes, please be mindful that you are amongst people who are very much accustomed to tactics such as yours. Tackle the overwhelming evidence that accounts for everything short of modern type scpecimen before claiming "Bigfoot don't exist". You have as much a burden in your claims as anyone else.

"In 1924 Albert Ostman claimed that he was kidnapped by a family of sasquatch. Ostman took lie detector tests, was interrogated by a magistrate renowned for making criminals crack under questioning and Ostman NEVER cracked, never goofed up his story and never made a penny from his story. On the contrarym, he was ridiculed, but the man deserves his place in history, as does Roger Patterson and to a lesser degree."

  4. The problem with the Ostman story is that this family of bigfoot would need to consume huge amounts of calories for their size, which they didn't do.

This makes the story a tall tale and not factual.

    1. Primatologist John Napier stated that "Ostman's story fails to convince me primarily on the grounds of the limited food resources available."

      Delete
    2. I like Napier as a very reputable enthusiast, but wouldn't it be guessing the dietary requirements of Sasquatch? Couldn't they simply have a longer duration to what calories they need from things like meat that they eat compared to primates like us? We know large mammals can go a significant time between eating large meals.

      Delete
    3. An 8 foot tall 800 lb creature would need to eat a lot, almost constantly. Big animals like elephants basically eat non stop while roaming. And gorillas also spend much of their time munching on food. When awake, bears do nothing more than constantly look for food,

I agree with Napier that the Ostman story doesn't hold up given the caloric requirements that would have been needed for a group of four creatures.

      Delete
    4. ... Listen, it's an interesting observation of the story to which I'd never considered, but we know enough about what large mammals eat in North America to know that their dietary habits might not be what we expect. We know large mammals don't consume large frequencies of meat daily, these are facts.

      Delete
    5. Not enough food in millions of acres of forest, fish laden streams and lakes, critters, deer, berries, root plants, and the list goes on, not to mention thieving off of outlying farms. The current estimate for grizzly bears in British Columbia is 16 to 18 k. Forest Giants are much more adept at finding food sources than a grizzly. So much for not to brilliant John Napier

    6. ...Not to mention the fact the story remained untold until bigfoot went mainstream....Highly questionable timing...

      Delete
    7. Yeah, Ostman didn't tell his story until 1957, over 30 years after it supposedly happened.

It's not that food isn't out there, it's that the family of bigfoot stayed there for 6 days preventing Ostman from escaping.

      Delete
    8. Well I find the fact that he past a lie detector's test rather interesting... I know there are reasons why this is not used in the court of law these days, but I still find it adds more credibility to his story.

There are many possible reasons as to why Ostman waited that long to tell his story, and this can be mirrored by the present day, in the manner in which people have had more confidence in coming forward with their accounts now that the topic has hit new heights of pop culture.

      Delete
    9. You think a lie detector test adds credibility to his story but when it comes to Bob Heionimus you state that a lie detector test is totally unreliable. You always cherry pick to bolster your case. If you truly believe the Ostman story then it's very clear you are not discerning when it comes to evidence for Bigfoot.

      Delete
    10. Could not agree more Iktomi. What always impressed me about his account was his so totally accurate description of them, there features, and manners, something that was not very well know or documented if at all at that time.

    11. Add to the fact that Ostman could have been mentally ill and completely believed his story was real. He would also pass a lie detector test as well. Garbage, a researcher of your supposed caliber should know better Iktomi. And like the other Anon posted you did know better when it suited your agenda of trying to discredit Bob Heionimus. Of course none of this matters because the intelligent people here allready know what a phony you are. The other 4 people that believe you know what you are talking about will believe you no matter what. I realized this when you were still promoting Todd Standings muppet head as real. Promising us groundbreaking evidence was coming from him just around the corner. We are now well into September and I haven't heard anything groundbreaking from Standing yet. Where is this film that is going to blow our minds? He fell WAY short of his crowd funding goal. Im sure hes still editing it as well. Takes a lot of work to make fiction look like reality. But still you assured us that he would be delivering the goods soon, that was a long time ago.

    12. Heironimus’ polygraph results in perspective; McCormick who conducted his first died in 2009 and Heironimus’ attorney, Barry Woodard, did not respond to requests from another local polygraph expert for a peer review of the test results. The credibility of the ‘Lie Detector’ show regarding his second, also took a hit when host Ed Gelb was accused of exaggerating his own academic credentials and the show was victimized by a guest who made up a story, aced Gelb’s polygraph and then bragged about it in a magazine.

Do you cherry pick or do you simply need to brush up on the topic?

      Delete
    13. 6:24... "Ostman could have been insane"; doesn't cut it.

As for Standing, I repeatedly stated that, anything up to a million times, that the pictures looked suspicious, but a Hollywood SFX expert couldn't rule them out as genuine and reeled off be most unrealistic and expensive SFX techniques to maybe achieve what we see in those photos. There is not one source that shows that those photos are conclusively fake, and what does a real sceptic do? It refrains from passing judgement until more data is available.

As for his documentary, he got run off from the field before putting anything out and has a wildlife biologist who is a former advisor to the UN claiming his research area is legitimate, as well as an anthropologist who is a world authority on evolutionary bipedalism claiming the same; what you gonna do about it?

      Delete

    15. Why does 6:24's statement that he may have been mentally ill not to be considered? I mean the story is suspect on so many levels. I can appreciate your passion but allowing any credence to this story does not help your credibility in your argument for Bigfoot's existence.
